“Why Not Us?”

Short post this week after weekend travel and a busy week.  Hope everyone is doing well and got the chance to enjoy a great game last night.

Congratulations to UConn in an historic National Championship.  Aside from the disappointment of seeing my team, the Gators, come so far only to serve as the ill-fated Goliath to UConn’s David, I was excited to watch the first ever 7/8 seed national championship match up (although the history and coaching of both programs makes it tough to call them true underdogs).  It reminded me of a comment following one of the many first round upsets.  While being interviewed courtside just after the win, the player (I can’t remember the team so I can find the direct quote) said “Why not us?” when explaining his perspective on the win.  The words and his tone said it all.

He and his teammates had put in the work, developed their skills and created an effective strategy to earn them the win.  Most importantly, they knew and believed in the opportunity their effort had afforded them and were tenacious enough to seize the moment.  I admired his perspective and considered its direct applicability to managing a business.  There are no guarantees of success, but developing your business with discipline and a thoughtful approach to your end goals greatly increases your chances for success over relying on talent alone.  Top seeds, incumbents or anyone with a natural advantage likely understand this truth, but it is best displayed when an underdog beats the odds.

Always sad to see the Gators lose, but glad it was to a great team that continued on to win the championship. Congrats again, Huskies.
